Architecture & History

The long-standing, successful exhibition activities of the Commission Fine Arts began back in 1972.

The long-standing, successful exhibition activities of the Commission Fine Arts began as early as 1972. From 1980, the stately villa of the Berowergut estate was made available to the municipality. In 15 years, no fewer than 50 art exhibitions were held there. This era came to an end in 1995 when the building was used by the Beyeler Foundation. However, an optimal solution for a new, contemporary exhibition space was found in the former farm buildings of the estate. This was opened in March 1998 as Kunst Raum Riehen.

The former tenant's house (Dreisässenhaus) was adapted to the new requirements through targeted restoration and conversion measures as well as an extension. The exhibition rooms on three levels are integrated into the former Tenn with a self-supporting steel structure and connected by an inserted staircase. Thanks to ingenious architectural interventions, six exhibition rooms with different dimensions and their own character have been created, which can be used in a wide variety of ways. The courtyard with its covered section can be used as a forum for various cultural activities and creates a connection between the interior and exterior spaces.
