Piero Fogliati / Glaser/Kunz. Visions and Dreams

Saturday, May 20, 2017 – Sunday, July 9, 2017

Curated by Sue Irion and Dominique Mollet

The Dreams and Visions exhibition brings together artists from two different generations. Both Piero Fogliati (1930-2016), who was born in Canelli/Asti, and the Zurich artist couple Glaser/Kunz, Daniel Glaser (1968) and Madgalena Kunz (1972), create projections and spatial installations that the viewer can hardly escape. Both invite the viewer to immerse themselves in their own world, which is characterized by sensory impressions and perceptions, whereby the distinction between reality and illusion becomes difficult.

Piero Fogliati gained international recognition at the XLII. Biennale di Venezia in 1986 with "Edicola delle Apparizioni" (the Kiosk of Apparitions), an empty room in which individual images appear and disappear out of nowhere before the eyes of the audience. The exploration of light and its phenomena or sounds were central themes of his work throughout his life and he wanted to create a "Città Fantastica" in which sounds, light and streams of water became aesthetic elements. In the exhibition Dreams and Visions, various of his optical and acoustic works, which are now in museums, can be experienced.

The artist duo Glaser/Kunz were invited to present their visions and perceptions alongside Fogliati's works. The two Zurich artists have become known for their "cinematographic sculptures", a combination of sculpture, film and spatial installation. At first, visitors do not know whether they are witnessing a live performance or a staging with projections. Glaser/Kunz tell stories with their visual worlds, speak of longings or dreams. Both Fogliati and Glaser/Kunz play with reality and entice visitors to enter new worlds, whereby it often remains unclear whether these even exist or are pure illusion.
