Mission statement
Kunst Raum Riehen is the public exhibition venue of the municipality of Riehen. It promotes contemporary art and shows both regional and international artistic positions. Its program is aimed at a broad and interested public. Admission is generally free for the public.
Location
Located in the historic Berowergut, Kunst Raum Riehen is in the immediate vicinity of the world-famous Fondation Beyeler. The 18th and 19th century farm buildings have been carefully renovated and architecturally adapted to the needs of modern exhibition spaces. The Kunst Raum Riehen contributes to Riehen's reputation as a place of art and culture. Its proximity to Basel and the tri-national Upper Rhine region provides scope for a variety of synergies and connections.
Programme
The Kunst Raum Riehen maintains a diverse program in the broad spectrum of visual arts. The exhibitions each deal in their own way with the oeuvre of one or more selected artists or with an artistic theme. Since 1998, six exhibition spaces with different characters have formed the framework for the exhibitions and events, which since 2022 have been programmed and curated by a curator in cooperation with the Commission Fine Arts of the municipality of Riehen. In this context, projects and interventions are also possible that seek an arc of tension from the visual arts to other arts or a dialog between the contemporary and the historical. The program is shaped by the search for quality in artistic expression.
Spaces
In the former farm buildings of the Berowergut, Kunst Raum Riehen has exhibition spaces on three floors. These rooms call for a precise approach to the spatial-architectural situation. The interior spaces and the unique courtyard situation at Kunst Raum Riehen enable exhibitions that seek a connection between interior and exterior space. Interventions in the courtyard, but also in other locations, are intended to promote awareness of art in public space.
Mediation activities
One of the principles of Kunst Raum Riehen's work is to promote contact between the public and artists in order to achieve a deeper understanding of unfamiliar forms of visual art. Talks, artistic events, lectures, guided tours and special activities in the summer complement the exhibitions and promote dialog between artists and the public. Special emphasis is placed on an educational program for children and young people.
