The exhibition brings together 12 artistic positions whose works deal with the concept of the engine in both its physical and spiritual sense. It is about the external as well as the internal drive. It is about the need for movement and examining its motivation. It is about processes and gears, about currents and machines. About changes of direction and cycles, about souls, rhythms and reanimations. Fuel, motor skills, mechanics and energy.
The curatorial selection by artist and curator Martin Chramosta does not focus on the movement machine itself, but rather on the internal and external impulses that drive artists in their work. Fuels, energy flows and lines of movement run through their works. When they come together, they intensify – or lead to crackling discharges. The selected works range from rhythmic drawings, auratically charged paintings and reliefs to conceptual objects and installations created through repetitive artistic movements or technical production processes. Gears, vessels and relics of industrial history are juxtaposed with natural eruptions or the depiction of the human body, allowing conclusions to be drawn about the tensions between nature, man and technology. The Kunst Raum Riehen serves as a housing for the works, which is permeated by a constant roaring and booming. The sound comes from several sound and video works, whose audio tracks overlap to form an engine-like background noise. The acoustic sources can only be localized gradually as you walk through the three exhibition levels.
